Emily hurriedly set the table, making sure everything looked perfect. Tonight, her husband Daniel’s sister, Charlotte, was visiting for the first time. Emily had never met her in person but had heard only glowing things—kind, accomplished, and successful.
“Everything’s ready!” she called, masking her slight nerves.
Moments later, Daniel and Charlotte entered the kitchen. Charlotte scanned the room, curled her lip in disapproval, and took her seat as if it were beneath her.
“I don’t want to sit at the same table as you,” Charlotte suddenly sneered, glaring at Emily.
Emily froze. She had no idea what was happening.
“What are you staring at?” Charlotte added with a mocking grin. “Don’t pretend you don’t know why I despise you!”
“I’ve never even met you before,” Emily murmured, stunned.
“Oh, never?” Charlotte scoffed. “You wrapped my brother around your finger and now sit here playing queen. If it weren’t for you, everything would be different!”
Daniel shifted uneasily and placed a hand on Charlotte’s shoulder.
“Charlotte, enough.”
“Quiet!” she snapped. “You were supposed to marry my best friend—the dress was picked, the venue booked. And now you’re here with this… woman.”
“That was long before I met Emily,” Daniel sighed.
“Stop lying to yourself!” Charlotte shot back. “She’s the reason! You left Sophie, and now you’re under her spell!”
Emily felt rage simmering inside her for the first time.
“I have a name, you know,” she hissed.
“I don’t care about your name,” Charlotte waved dismissively. “You don’t belong here! I hoped my brother would come to his senses, but clearly, you’ve got him wrapped up tight.”
Emily looked at Daniel, waiting for support, but he just stared at his feet.
“How much longer do I have to listen to this?” Emily asked coldly.
“No one asked for your opinion,” Charlotte retorted.
“Forgotten whose house this is?” Emily’s voice trembled with suppressed anger. “If you’re a guest here, at least act like one!”
“I couldn’t care less,” Charlotte snorted. “This is my brother’s house, not yours. If I’d been around back then, there never would’ve been a wedding!”
Emily turned to Daniel.
“Are you really going to stay silent?”
He hesitated, lacking the courage to stand up for his wife.
“Fine,” Emily exhaled sharply. “If neither of you are happy here, the door’s that way. Both of you.”
Charlotte lifted her chin haughtily.
“I’m only leaving with Daniel.”
“Perfect,” Emily nodded calmly.
“Are you serious?” Daniel asked, bewildered.
Charlotte seized the moment.
“Look how she talks to you! Are you really going to let her order you around?”
“Shut up!” Daniel suddenly exploded. “Why did you even come here? To ruin my marriage?”
“I came to see you, not her!” Charlotte sobbed.
“And instead, you caused a scene,” he shot back.
Charlotte jumped up, knocking dishes to the floor.
“Clean it up yourself!” she shouted before storming out and slamming the door.
But the damage was already done.
An hour later, Emily stood in the bedroom doorway, holding Daniel’s suitcase.
“Go stay with your precious sister. You don’t belong here anymore,” she said quietly.
“Emily, you know it’s not—” Daniel started, but she only shook her head.
“No, Dan. I’m done understanding. Done forgiving. Done hoping.”
And he left.
Months passed.
Emily lived alone. At first, it hurt—achingly so. But with each day, relief settled in. No more humiliation, no more betrayal, no more silence when she needed defending.
Daniel stayed with Charlotte, but happiness never came. Two months later, Charlotte returned to her life abroad, leaving him alone in an empty flat with nothing but regret.
Only then did he realize who he’d lost forever.
But it was too late.
